The Birth of an Icon

In 1940, with the Second World War already underway, the U.S. military requested the development of a lightweight vehicle capable of performing multiple roles while providing four-wheel drive and excellent mobility.

American Bantam, Willys-Overland, and Ford competed to meet the requirement.

The Willys design was eventually selected, and production began in early 1941.

Approximately 640,000 Willys-based Jeeps were produced, including around 277,000 vehicles manufactured by Ford under license. This made the Jeep one of the most widely produced light vehicles of the Allied war effort.
